Stub -- Go Solar
We at the PSC understand the ins-and-outs of the solar PV acquisition process and are excited to work with you to find the best possible solar solution for your organization.
It is important to recognize before all else that installing a solar PV system is a significant investment. This being said, the happiest and most informed customers are those who are fully aware of the technology involved, reliable industry consultants and primary legislation that governs the renewable energy field. Below are a few recommendations we have provided to help you begin to move forward towards a more sustainable future for your business.
CONDUCT BACKGROUND RESEARCH
A solar PV (or solar photovoltaic) system is constructed using four primary system components and operates very similarly to almost all other electromechanical power generation systems. Before committing to any solar installation project, we recommend that you take as much time as necessary to familiarize yourself with the technology and terminology that will be used. For reference, a few of the most fundamental ‘building block’ components are as follows:
- PV PANELS
Absorbs sunlight into the cells and converts the solar energy directly into electricity. - CHARGE REGULATOR
Regulates the voltage and current coming from the solar panels going to the battery to keep it from overcharging. - INVERTER
Changes direct current (DC) output of the PV cell into a utility frequency alternating current (AC) which can be fed into an electricity grid. - BATTERY SYSTEM
Manages the battery to keep it from operating outside its safe operating area, monitoring its state, calculating secondary data, reporting that data, controlling its environment, authenticating and/or balancing it.
CONNECT WITH OTHER SOLAR OWNERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Now that you know what makes up a system, you can see that it really isn’t overly complex. The next step in the process is to begin networking with other solar owners in your community. By doing so, you can learn more about the benefits of installing a solar PV system, see first-hand the impact this technology can make on an organization, and discuss any other concerns you may have with other people who were in the same situation as you!
The Pennsylvania Solar Center is currently developing an interactive project map that will help prospective solar investors locate ongoing projects and completed solar installations within their community. Feel free to use this tool below to check and see if there are any organizations in your community that has already made the pledge towards using sustainable solar energy.

FIND A REPUTABLE SOLAR INSTALLER
Finding a reliable installer is one of the most critical decisions made throughout the entire process of acquiring a solar system. Whether it be a small or large scale project, both require significant attention to detail and should be carried out by only qualified professionals. A quality installer will not only be the ones putting together your system but also maintaining it in the future. Because of such, is important to build a solid, trusting, and comfortable relationship before committing in order to assure the long-term success of the project. To help direct you in the correct direction, the Pennsylvania Solar Center maintains a non-biased installer directory of all qualified solar installers throughout the state of Pennsylvania. To view a list of qualified solar installers in your area, start by clicking your county from the multiple tabs below and scroll down.
